When is a shower enclosure considered accessible?

The DIN 18040-2 standard specifies the requirements that must be met in Germany for a bathroom to be considered accessible. Kermi shower design explains what needs to be considered when planning an accessible shower enclosure in accordance with legal standards.

One of the main criteria for accessible bathroom design in accordance with DIN standard 18040-2 is a room layout that allows sufficient freedom of movement and provides space for walking aids, wheelchairs and carers. For example, a person with a walking aid needs a movement area of 120 cm x 120 cm, while a person in a wheelchair needs 150 cm x 150 cm. The implementation of an accessible shower area in accordance with DIN 18040 requires that it be level with the adjacent bathroom and not lowered by more than 2 cm. The Kermi shower design wet floor system meets these requirements when assembled correctly and with the selection of a suitable board.

In addition, the flooring must be slip-resistant, which can be easily achieved with the individual tiling of the Kermi shower design shower area. Kermi shower design shower enclosures can be assembled accessible, offering threshold-free access to the shower enclosure. According to DIN standard 18040-2, it is important that they are easy to use without requiring any effort. Kermi shower design shower enclosures are developed according to the universal design principle, are very easy to use and offer maximum comfort for all age groups and situations.

Kermi Duschdesign barrierefreie Badlösung mit Profil-Duschkabine LIGA
This shower solution from Kermi is accessible and compliant with standards. The WALK-IN Wall Gleit from the LIGA series is open and accessible without barriers. The shower enclosure has internal dimensions of 1.20 x 1.20 m and offers sufficient freedom of movement, for example for use with a walking aid.

In the following bathroom, sliding doors from the LIGA series were chosen. Both as WALK-IN Wall Gleit, a partly framed walk-in version with a fixed and a sliding segment, and as the closed version, LIGA is ideal for accessible bathroom design. Thanks to a special horizontal sealing strip with a water bounce effect on the sliding segment, it meets all the requirements of the splash water test in accordance with DIN EN 14428 (CE) and PPP 53005 (TÜV-GS). When not in use, the door panel can be easily pushed back, creating even more space.

For use with a walking aid, the internal dimensions of the closed shower enclosure must be 1.20 x 1.20 m. A Kermi shower design wet floor system measuring 1.20 x 1.20 m was installed here. The required internal dimensions were achieved by performing the assembly outside the tile joint.

Even as a closed version, the sliding doors with floor clearance of the LIGA provide a comfortable entrance to the shower area. For use with a walking aid, the internal dimensions of the closed shower enclosure must be 1.20 x 1.20 m. In the case of a Kermi shower design wet floor system measuring 1.20 x 1.20 m, these internal dimensions of the shower enclosure are achieved through assembly outside the tile joint.
