The General Building Inspection Certificate (abP) serves as proof of suitability for use of non-regulated construction products and types of construction in accordance with the building regulations of the federal states, and is indicated on a construction product by the conformity mark (Ü mark).
In Germany, DIN standard 18040-2 sets out the requirements that must be met for a bathroom to be officially classified as accessible. To create an accessible shower area, it must be at the same level as the adjacent sanitary area and must not be lowered by more than 2 cm. Floor coverings must be slip-resistant in accordance with GUV-I 8527, assessment group B. Another key criterion is a layout that allows sufficient freedom of movement and provides space for a walking aid, a wheelchair and a carer. For example, a person using a rollator requires a manoeuvring area of 1.20 m x 1.20 m, whilst a person in a wheelchair requires 1.50 m x 1.50 m. The Kermi shower area meets all these requirements when installed correctly and with the selection of the appropriate panel.
In both private and public settings, the floor-level, tiled shower area has long been the first choice. The installation of an accessible shower area in accordance with DIN 18040 requires that it be level with the adjacent sanitary area and not be lowered by more than 2 cm. The floor coverings must be slip-resistant in accordance with GUV-I 8527, assessment group B. For wheelchair users, manoeuvring areas of 150 cm x 150 cm must be provided in all shower areas. For accessible flats, a minimum area of 120 cm x 120 cm is sufficient. The Kermi shower area meets all these requirements when installed correctly and with the selection of the appropriate board.
Anodising is the term used to describe a treatment method for aluminium, in which an electrochemical process is used to form an oxide layer on the material. This oxide layer acts as a protective coating on the aluminium. What makes this process unique is that no additional layer is applied to the aluminium during anodising. Instead, the process creates a layer that is formed from the aluminium itself. The main reason for anodising is to protect the aluminium. Thanks to this process, corrosion resistance is increased and the material retains its attractive appearance for longer. Anodising creates a hard, wear-resistant layer that provides good protection for the aluminium beneath.

Not sure which cleaning agents are suitable for your Kermi shower enclosure?
Our recommendation: the PremiumCLEAN cleaning agents from Kermi Duschdesign, which have been specially developed for the gentle cleaning of our high-quality shower enclosures.
The horizontal seal strip on Kermi shower enclosures ensures that water runs off more effectively whilst showering. The seal strip can be easily removed and washed in the dishwasher. It can also be cleaned very easily with a small brush – perhaps even a toothbrush. Should you nevertheless need a new one, you can purchase one at any time from our spare parts shop.
Depending on the range, Kermi shower enclosures are available in high-gloss silver, matt silver and white finishes. Additional coloured finishes for a customised shower enclosure can be arranged via the EXTRA special service.
In addition, Kermi Duschdesign offers the modern Dark Edition range. This comprises seven ranges, whose standard models feature an elegant soft black finish.
When choosing the right Kermi shower enclosure, it is important to analyse the on-site conditions carefully. The available space and structural conditions determine which designs are feasible. Features such as sloping ceilings, existing walls, skirting boards or edges limit the range of products available. Kermi Shower Design offers a unique variety of models and variants, providing the right solution for every building situation.
Immediately after installing the Kermi shower enclosure, it must be sealed with silicone. Kermi Duschdesign recommends allowing 24 hours for the silicone to cure before the shower enclosure is used. It is important that the silicone cures and dries completely. On the surface, the curing time is only approx. 15–20 minutes. After this, the sealant has already set and is difficult to work with.
Silicone is very sensitive to water whilst curing. During this time, moisture reduces the adhesive properties of the silicone and causes the joint to leak. Do not operate the shower enclosure in any way, nor attempt to clean or polish it, during the drying period. In addition to its sealing function, silicone also performs a structural function and further stabilises the shower enclosure.
Kermi shower boards can, to a certain extent, be cut to size using standard tools, such as a hand-held circular saw. This allows the panels to be individually adapted to the shower layout. Cutting the panel reduces its thickness at the cut edge, meaning that the resulting difference must be compensated for on site using tile adhesive when tiling. The minimum dimensions to which the respective panels can be cut without voiding the warranty are set out in the ‘Prices and Technical Specifications’ document.
Kermi shower enclosures come in an incredibly wide range of designs and sizes to suit virtually any installation scenario, whether fitted into a recess, a corner or as a U-shaped enclosure. The choice of design depends on the bathroom layout, the room configuration, structural conditions or personal taste. Whether, for example, you’re looking for a swing-and-fold solution for a small bathroom, a quarter-circle shower enclosure as a space-saving corner solution, or a spacious walk-in solution for a luxury bathroom, Kermi shower design has the right solution for every requirement.
The volume of wastewater in the shower enclosure varies depending on the fittings used, such as a hand shower, overhead shower, shower panel or rain shower head. It is important that the drain is capable of handling the volume of water produced by the fittings. Kermi Duschdesign drains have different
drainage capacities due to their installation height, geometry and diameter.

ESG-H is the abbreviation for toughened safety glass (ESG) that has undergone a heat-soak test. ESG-H is available on request.
Spacious walk-in shower enclosures are all the rage in bathrooms. When choosing one, however, you need to check whether it can actually be carried into the bathroom. A narrow stairwell on the way to the bathroom limits the size of the unit. You must ensure that the shower enclosure, including its packaging, can be carried through the stairwell.
In areas where people walk barefoot, and particularly in wet rooms such as shower cubicles, it is important to choose slip-resistant tiles. Slip-resistant tiles from Class 10 upwards are recommended. With the LINE shower tray, a tile installation height of between 5 and 25 mm is possible; with the POINT shower tray, up to 40 mm. When tiling, a tiling guide must be used to maintain the minimum gap (space between the tile edge and the channel cover). When installing the POINT shower tray, no silicone must be allowed to enter the space between the drain frame and the tile to ensure secondary drainage.
The Kermi shower system with channel or point drain is available in a range of installation heights and dimensions. Depending on the installation situation and specific requirements, Kermi Duschdesign offers the option of installing conventional shower tray systems or extra-low-profile complete shower trays (minimum installation height 65 mm). The installation height depends not on the tray but on the drain. Thanks to their low installation heights, all Kermi Duschdesign system drains are ideally suited for both new builds and refurbishments. A range of variants is available for vertical (minimum installation height 40 mm) and horizontal (minimum installation height 97 mm) installations.
The outer edge of the glass to the wall.
Kermi shower enclosures are available in different types of glass, depending on the series and design. A distinction is made between shower enclosures made of solid glass, consisting of single-pane safety glass in accordance with EN 12150, and those made of Kerolan plastic glass. Sandblasted finishes and mirrored glass are available as optional extras.
To ensure safe water drainage, the floor must always have a gradient. If the gradient is insufficient or non-existent, this can lead to flooding or the formation of puddles on the tiled floor.
The relevant technical literature recommends a minimum gradient of 0.5–1.5%. However, to achieve the backwater height of 20 mm above the channel grate required by DIN EN 1253 and the resulting maximum drainage rate without water flowing into adjacent bathroom and living areas, it is recommended that the shower channel be installed against the wall with a floor gradient of 2% towards the wall.
Each shower enclosure range has its own distinctive handle. EXTRA offers the option of choosing a different handle from the Kermi range in addition to the standard handle.
Kermi shower enclosures can be installed on both Kermi shower bases and all standard shower trays. The Kermi shower range includes various standard heights. A height of 2000 mm is recommended for installation on a Kermi shower base. Custom heights are available up to a maximum height of 2200 mm.
If a trap is filled with water, this prevents sewer gases from escaping. DIN 1986-100 specifies a standard-compliant water seal height of 50 mm for all odour traps (DIN 1986-100). If the water seal height is less than this, it must be inspected and approved by the building authorities (abP). Thanks to its design, the Kermi shower system ensures that there is always sufficient water in the seal.
Kermi shower enclosures are fitted with a sticker bearing an identification code for clear identification; this sticker remains on the shower enclosure even after installation.
Niche, corner or U-shaped cubicle
The recess
With this niche solution, enclosed on three sides, all that’s needed to step into a well-maintained shower space is the right door.
The corner
Here, there are virtually no limits to your individual preferences. The classic square shape with a front or diagonal entry, or even with a seamless connection to the bath. The quarter-circle shower enclosure adds a touch of flair to your bathroom design. And, as an added bonus, it saves space in an elegant way. Or the pentagonal solution as an unconventional option, which is particularly space-saving on the outside.
The U-shaped enclosure
A generous solution for the spacious bathroom.
Expansion joint made of elastic joint filler.
Minor imperfections in the mirror coating, which may arise as a result of the manufacturing process, do not constitute grounds for a complaint.
Kermi shower enclosures are renowned for their exceptional durability. However, should a new spare part be required, Kermi Duschdesign guarantees the availability of all spare parts even after a model has been discontinued. For purchases made on or before 31 December 2007, a 10-year spare parts guarantee applies; for purchases made on or after 1 January 2008, a 20-year spare parts guarantee applies.

With Kermi WALK-IN shower enclosures, it is possible to retrofit a door. Depending on the installation situation, this can be done using a swing door with a strip seal or a magnetic seal. If there is an existing ceiling support, the WALK-IN partition can be fitted with a swing door featuring a special locking profile.
A seat in the shower enclosure enhances comfort whilst showering. You can shower comfortably whilst seated or take a short break in between. Options include a movable seat, a fixed seat or a built-in bench. All variants can be easily combined with Kermi shower enclosures. Customised solutions, such as a cut-out in the fixed panel, can also be arranged at any time via the EXTRA special service.
When showering, the impact of water hitting the floor can cause noise that is transmitted as sound into adjacent rooms. This can affect the quality of living. The building regulations set out in DIN 4109 / VDI 4100 regarding sound insulation are met during the installation of the Kermi shower area through the use of sound-insulating mats. The mats are available in thicknesses of 5 and 9 mm and are always laid over the entire surface of the shower area on the subfloor. The mats can also be cut to size or laid end-to-end. A table provided by Kermi Duschdesign can be used to determine which mat is required for which shower situation, ensuring compliance with the relevant sound insulation requirements.
The amount of space required for showering and the type of entry that is considered comfortable vary from person to person and depend on individual physique, physical needs and personal preferences. Last but not least, the layout of the bathroom also plays a major role, as it determines which design can actually be installed. A detailed consultation with the supplier beforehand is therefore very important in order to identify the ideal shower enclosure. With an extremely wide range of different designs and sizes, Kermi Duschdesign offers the right shower solution for everyone.
Everyone can decide for themselves how watertight they want their Kermi shower enclosure to be. The general rule is that the higher the barrier, the less splash water escapes. A fitted floor threshold increases splash protection, whilst a floor profile acts as a dam.
If you opt for a barrier-free shower area, you benefit from unrestricted ease of access, ease of cleaning and an elegant appearance. However, the absence of a barrier or threshold means that water can escape more easily. A special horizontal sealing strip with a water-repellent effect, included in the scope of delivery, ensures satisfactory splash protection for floorless shower enclosures. All Kermi shower enclosures meet the requirements of the splash protection test in accordance with DIN EN 14428.
Kermi Duschdesign offers a range of stabilisation options that ensure the shower enclosure stands securely. Whether T-stabilisation, 90° stabilisation or 45° stabilisation is used depends on the specific series and design. Ideally, the stabilisation should be taken into account when planning the tile heights. This is because if the stabilisation has to be fitted above the tiles, this can lead to problems during installation.
The shower enclosure’s packaging can be opened easily, effortlessly and safely using the integrated tear-off strip on the box. No tools are required, and there is no risk of damaging the product whilst opening it.
There are a few things to bear in mind when tiling the shower area. The wall tiles should extend higher than the shower enclosure itself so that the stabilising frame can be fitted without any problems. The wall tiles should be laid further out than the shower enclosure, so that the tiles extend beyond it. This ensures that the glass fittings for the shower enclosure can be fitted without any issues.
For the installation of Kermi shower enclosures, it is important that the tiling and silicone work has been completed and that the silicone has already dried sufficiently (waiting time of 24 hours). Coarse dirt, such as tile adhesive, should be removed before installation.
Kermi Duschdesign uses high-quality single-pane safety glass compliant with EN 12150-1 for all its shower enclosures. This glass is extremely resistant to impact, shock and bending stresses, and can also withstand thermal stresses. Should the extreme case nevertheless occur and the glass pane be damaged, the glass does not shatter but simply crumbles into blunt fragments, similar to a car windscreen. Nevertheless, great care must be taken during the installation and use of the shower enclosure to ensure that the glass edges are not damaged.
With ESG, spontaneous breakage can occur due to nickel sulphide inclusions. This risk can be reduced by a hot storage test. However, even with the most modern tests (ESG-H), it is unfortunately still not possible to 100% screen out such panes, meaning that an unavoidable residual risk always remains.

All WALK-IN shower solutions from Kermi Duschdesign featuring 8 mm thick glass can be installed into an existing U-profile provided by the customer. The internal dimensions of the U-profile must be 12–16 mm wide and at least 6 mm deep. Installation must be carried out in accordance with the Kermi Duschdesign installation instructions, and orders can only be placed using the customisation sheet.
Kermi shower enclosures meet the requirements of the splash-proof test in accordance with DIN EN 14428.
The Kermi shower area is wheelchair-accessible when tiles are at least 50 x 50 mm in size. Tests were carried out using tiles measuring 50 x 50 mm. A cyclic load test confirmed that wheelchair use causes no damage. The result of the cyclic load test for wheelchair load-bearing capacity is equivalent to 10 years’ use and a load of 200 kg.

Extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) is a closed-cell, rigid insulation material made from polystyrene. The polystyrene granules are expanded into sheets with the addition of a blowing agent (carbon dioxide). The extrusion process creates a multitude of small closed cells, which ensure high mechanical strength and high resistance to moisture. The load-bearing capacity is 0.25 Newton/mm², i.e. 25 tonnes/m².
